Beijing, 30th March 2024 (BISTU)--- Juergen Jost, Director of Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig, Germany, and a member of the Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (the National Academy of Germany), conducted an academic visit to BISTU on 29th March 2024. President Guo Fu met with Prof. Juergen Jost.

Guo Fu extended warm welcome to Prof. Juergen Jost. Offering an introduction to BISTU in respect of academic disciplines, talent cultivation, academic research, academic activities, and international cooperation, Guo Fu held talks with Prof. Juergen Jost on cross-disciplinary research in information technology, life science, mathematics, etc. Guo Fu commented that mathematics is the backbone of all scientific disciplines. It provides the tools and methods necessary for conducting experiments, analyzing data, and making predictions. He added that BISTU attached great importance to mathematics. As a world renowned mathematician and an authoritative expert in geometry analysis, Prof. Juergen Jost’s constructive advices would provide valuable references for development of mathematics and other inter-disciplinary researches at BISTU.

Prof. Juergen Jost expressed thanks to the cordial invitation of BISTU. He introduced research areas, research strengths, and frontier achievements of Max Planck Society and Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig, where he is a founding director. He added that BISTU has a long history in education and a balanced structure for natural sciences and engineering studies. He looked forward to conducting more diversified academic exchanges and communication with BISTU to drive progress through interaction.

Vice President Xiao Zhisong and Prof. Juergen Jost held a discussion on how to enhance school-running level of a university, how to integrate mathematic theories with quantum entanglement, etc. He also discussed research progresses of quantum information and computation with Prof. Shaoming Fei, a visiting professor of the University of Bonn.

Dean Wang Aiwen of School of Applied Science explained development of mathematics as an academic discipline at BISTU and conducted discussions with Prof. Juergen Jost on interdisciplinary research of mathematics and mechanics.

The discussions were joined by Senior Research Fellow Li Xianqing of Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Leipzig, Germany and faculty of BISTU General Administration Office and School of Applied Science.
