【Academician Seminar】Interconnection and Interconnectivity for Computility: Academician Zheng Weimin Delivered Academic Report at BISTU

Beijing, 28th March 2024 (BISTU)--- Academician Zheng Weimin of Chinese Academy of Engineering (expert of super computer, professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University, and Dean of Institute of High Performance Computing of Tsinghua University) delivered an academic report on Interconnection and Interconnectivity for Computility at Shahe Campus of BISTU on 27th March 2024.

President Guo Fu met with Academician Zheng Weimin. On behalf of BISTU, Guo Fu extended warm welcome and sincere thanks to Academician Zheng Weimin. Following an introduction to BISTU in respect of academic disciplines, educational features, scientific and technological innovation, academic exchange and communication, etc., Guo Fu hoped that Academician Zheng Weimin would provide professional guidance and constructive suggestions with BISTU programs in information technology. He requested that relating BISTU schools and research teams should strengthen communication with Academician Zheng Weimin and his team members to learn from successful experiences and practices.

Academician Zheng Weimin introduced HPC Computility, AI Computility and data centers and analyzed two systems supporting large model training, i.e., Nvidia-based GPU and the system based on domestic AI chips. He pointed out that China is on a leading position in terms of computility in the field of big data. However, we still have a lot to catch up in AI computility and HPC computility. Particularly, intelligent computility is still casting severe constrains on innovative development of AI. Academician Zheng Weimin pointed out the three problems for computility in China: diversified domestic super computer frameworks indicated a certain difficulty in application porting; domestic computility platforms were to be improved to support computing concerning complex application; and AI enterprises were facing with various risks. He suggested that R&D, innovation, and high-caliber talent cultivation in computility should be boosted to ensure interconnection and interconnectivity among different types of computility.

The outstanding report delivered by Academician Zheng Weimin won warm applauses of all attendees, followed by interactive discussions.

Academician Seminar, a high-caliber comprehensive academic exchange event of BISTU, aimed at guiding scientific and technological innovation, forming a sound atmosphere for academic research, and strengthening innovative competence and academic influence of the University.

The Seminar was chaired by Vice President Chen Xin and attended by over 200 faculty and students from Office for Scientific Research and Computer Science School.

Zheng Weimin, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, is a professor and Ph.D. supervisor at Department of Computer Science and Technology of Tsinghua University and Dean of Institute of High Performance Computing of Tsinghua University. His research interests include HPC, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Network Storage and Disaster Recovery, Compute Architecture, etc. In network storage and disaster recovery area, he has put forward a flexible and scalable network storage architecture. He is the first in China to have developed high performance computer clusters. He and his team members are the recipients of the 2016 ACM Gordon Bell Prize for their research project “10M-Core Scalable Fully-Implicit Solver for Nonhydrostatic Atmospheric Dynamics.”He is also a winner of 1 first prize and 2 second prizes of National Award for Science and Technology Progress, 1 second prize of the State Technological Innovation Award, Science and Technology Progress Award of Ho Leung Ho Lee (HLHL) Foundation, and the first China storage lifetime achievement award.
