Youth at University: Dialogue between BISTU President Liu Gonghui and Students

Beijing, December 18 (BISTU)--- On the open day of University Senior Administration, President Liu Gonghui and scores of freshmen had a fruitful discussion on how to spend the four years at university.

The forum started by reviews on video of 2013 graduation ceremony. “We would like to hear your expression or thoughts on the video clip. Possibly we could share your resolution of future and your expectation on yourself in four years time.” said Hui Shiyong, Director of Office for Students Affairs.

Prof. Liu Gonghui piloted the discussion in a family-like way: “Since the very first day you entered BISTU, you and the University has been closely connected, whatever might happen to you and your life in the future. Now it’s been three months and new thoughts on the University, life and youth might have been triggered. I would like to listen to your views and plans on your future, especially on the following four years. ” “We are now a family. Share with us whatever you want to. ” President Liu added with a smile.

“The way of learning at university differs greatly from that in high school. At university self-taught learning in more preferable, which indicates a rich campus life. However, I did not notice much art-related activities. Will BISTU recruit more students in the area of arts and sports?” Ms. Qu Tianjing from School of Information management asked.

At questions like this, President Liu Gonghui offered detailed explanations. “We fully encourage students to choose more optional modules if they like to. The University has been striving to authorize lecturers with the right to teach and offer students with the resources to learn. Currently BISTU is offering 35 undergraduate programmes, covering 6 disciplines. But very few are art degrees. BISTU will consider recruiting students in art and sports area, which is helpful in enriching campus culture.”

Students are greatly encouraged with the warmth of President Liu Gonghui and questions and ideas burst out one after another. “I want to talk about optimization of teaching resources at BISTU......”

“Is it possible for the University to set up a selection mechanism so that at the end of each semester, students would be re-arranged into different classes? Will it be possible for the scholarship not to be awarded on the final-grade basis?”

“More internship is requested for media and communication modules. Students learning such modules cannot linger only with theories. ”

“Majority of the students are over 18 and they shall have the objectives. They are to responsible for themselves. It is not like in high school where teachers and parents get everything done for us. We really want to talk to the University and get difficulties sorted out.”

“BISTU fully support you in achieving your objectives and hopes that your knowledge will be equipped with information science and technology. Just keep going and win advantages for yourselves for future competition. All dreams will come true.” Smiled at the passion and active discussion, President Liu happily responded. He also encouraged the students to enjoy the university life and make a meaningful four-years. “BISUT is not a perfect place for everyone. However, it is alma mater for everyone. Upon graduation you will be hating to leave her. I sincerely wish you every success and make BISTU be proud of you.”

Students also exchanged ideas with President Liu on English learning, specialty knowledge, furthering studies, internship, campus activities, and bettering living conditions on campus. President Liu said corresponding departments and offices would work on these. For some resource-constrained problems, BISTU would sort them out, with understanding from students requested.

The two and a half hours communication ended with an inspiring speech by President Liu. He guided students to ponder over growing-up, youth, and dream. “You are on the stage of growing up, facing a variety of attractions. I sincerely hope that you cherish the four years. It is a time for your to learn knowledge, honesty, and integrity. Your effort and perspiration is the foundation of future success.” President Liu Gonghui stressed.
