IJCAI 2013 Robot of First Prize on Service Skill Awarded to BISTU Invention

Beijing International Conference Centre witnessed the 23rd  International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI 2013) from 3rd to 9th 2013, hosted by Institute of Automation of China Academy of Sciences, China Association of Automation, and China Association for Artificial Intelligence. As the highest level academic conference on artificial intelligence, IJCAI opens every two years. This is the first time it is run in China. Service Robot designed by BISTU’s Sum Team was awarded First Prize on Robot of Service Skill.

(Sebastian Thrun, Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and also an expert on artificial intelligence and robots; a specialist and team leader of Google Driverless Car. )   

  

On the conference, BISTU service robot demonstrated the process of fetching drinks for the host with Chinese audio instructions. With proper understanding of the instructions and based on the pre-created environment map, the robot went directly to the table, picked the right drink by visual identity system, and passed it to the host using its arms.

In the demonstration, BISTU Robot successfully identified the right drink from its resemblance---another drink with very similar color and can, although it only adopted Kinect colour pixels.
