Beijing, 11th October 2023 (BISTU)---Chaired by President Guo Fu, the Conference on “implementing the guidelines of BISTU conference of science and technology and facilitating the six major projects” was held 11th October 2023 at Taihanglu Campus of the University aiming to reinforce the educational features in academic research and to promote high quality development of the University.  

Reports were delivered by deans of BISTU schools on understanding of the six major projects, how to complete the six major projects, highlighting the features of academic research, building high level research teams and research platforms, and future plans.  

Reviewing these reports, Guo Fu pointed out the common issues concerning academic research in the schools. First, academic research competence of BISTU schools was expected to be stronger to provide sufficient support with development objective of the University in respective of academic disciplines, academic programs, and fundamental research. Second, more efforts were expected to be invested in participating in academic research and applying for National Natural Science Foundation. And third, there was more to do in building high level sci-tech innovation teams and platforms. Guo Fu stressed that all BISTU schools should view and think of academic research work of the University from a holistic, strategic perspective. We were to reinforce features, break barriers, and innovate pathways to improve the level and efficiency of academic research. He raised request on sci-tech development in four aspects. First, strengthening fundamental research and constantly enhancing the competences in innovation and sustainable development. Second, seizing current opportunities and investing efforts in five research areas with strengths at the University. Third, attaching importance to commercialization of research achievements, i.e., focusing on high level research achievements and commercialization of these achievements. It was necessary to innovate our research system and promote school-local government integration and school-local region integration so as to provide accurate service for national and regional strategic development. And fourth, corresponding support and motivation measures would be enhanced to guide faculties and motivate them to take initiative in participating in and contributing to key research projects.  

Vice President Chen Xin requested that in the first place we were to seize current opportunities to strengthen the organized research and to promote development of academic discipline and research teams. Second, we were to build high level research platforms and strategic sci-tech research teams. Third, features of our research should be highlighted in providing support with national sci-tech strategy and development of Beijing. And fourth, we were to foster an atmosphere for research innovation to provide help and support with growth of talents.  

Vice President Wang Xingfen stressed that the importance of academic research should be revealed to all. Research served as the source and teaching as the outcome. The relationship between research and teaching was to be handled in a dialectical way. Second, we should broaden our horizon to innovate pathways of research. And third, high quality interconnectivity between academic discipline construction and academic research should be strengthened to promote sci-tech research.  

The conference was attended by faculties and staff of Office for Scientific Research, Human Resources Office, Office for Assets Management, Division of Labs Management, External Liaison Office, Alumni Office, Industrial Development Office, BISTU schools, Postgraduate School, and Advanced Technology Development Institute.
