Beijing, 30th April 2026 (BISTU)--- Professor Yang Shengjie of Singapore University of Technology and Design (fellow of the Academic of Engineering Singapore, fellow of Singapore National Academy of Science, and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering) delivered an academic seminar at BISTU on 28th April 2026. In “Navigating the AI Era: Future Jobs and Research”, Professor Yang Shengjie discussed industrial revolution, future career, and research orientation in the era of AI. The Seminar was hosted by Chairperson Xu Zhan of College of Information and Communication Engineering.

Following an explanation of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity), Prof. Yang Shengjie offered a systematic analysis of the six major drive changing today’s world. He commented that semiconductors are not only the cornerstone of digital economy but also the fundamental hardware for AI, big data, and the internet of things. Talents in this field would be very popular in ten years. It is necessary to have a cross-disciplinary mindset, innovative spirit, and global horizon. Prof. Yang Shengjie said.
Prof. Yang Shengjie pointed out that automated and intelligent robots bring new occupations centered on “innovation economy”, though they are replacing traditional jobs in an increasing speed. Information and data becomes new “currency”. Core skills now include AI, data analysis, 3D printing, etc. He suggested that students should actively embrace changes and build the competence of life-long learning. He also explored the prospect of frontier projects in AI and big data, including autonomous learning and evolution of software, big-data-based decision-making system, and in-depth application of AI in design and manufacturing of semiconductors.
In response to the concern “whether AI would impact traditional engineering majors”, Prof. Yang Shengjie said that AI is not a substitute but a tool and a catalyst. The systematic thinking of traditional engineering, once combined with AI, would become even stronger. He also offered an introduction to strengths of information and communication industries in Singapore.

The Academician Seminar helped faculty and students obtain a deeper understanding of the changes in global technology and employment in the era of AI. It broadened students’ horizon and motivated them to take initiative in making their career planning. The open, cross-cultural platform of academic exchange and communication platform at BISTU would see more high-level experts and scholars home and broad, aiming to nurture outstanding talents with global competitiveness and innovative spirit.
