“Modern university students grow up with internet. They study and make friends on line. In view of the impact of internet technology on teaching and learning, BISTU cannot afford to hide. ” said Wang Xingfen, Director of Academic Affairs Office of BISTU on Micro-Online Video Course training on 18th December 2013.

This Micro-online video course training was one stage of the teaching reform conducted by BISTU. It aims at perfecting teaching methods and enhancing teaching competence of young and middle-aged faculties. It is a reform on teaching means and techniques. Participated in the training were 55 faculties and staff members of Experimental & Training Center for Electronic Information and Control.

Prof. Liu Benpei from China University of Geosciences has been actively promoting online courses. He delivered a lecture titled Further Thinking and Practice on Open Online Courses. Prof. Liu identified the differences and links between Micro-online video courses and massive open online courses (MOOC). Combining case study of teaching, he offered advice on how to make a qualified online course. He further pointed out that teaching and research were not necessarily to be separated and young faculties could well make research achievements by devoting to teaching. Beijing Superstar Erya Education Technology Co. Ltd. introduced Micro-online video courses and MOOC from perspective of the industry.
Micro-online video course refers to the course delivered by taking video as the major means of teaching and recording the whole process of teaching and learning of a certain knowledge area in the class. It is normally 5 to 8 minutes, with maximum length less than 10 minutes. It has become a fast-rising delivering mode for students in the era of Web 2.0. MOOC is short for massive open online course, being introduced to the world in 2012 as a new, online teaching mode. And thus the year 2012 is normally called birth year of MOOC, a milestone in the development of higher education.
BISTU attached enough importance to micro-online course and MOOC and has published a notice for all faculties to conduct micro-online teaching.
