Prof. Andrea Ferrari Appointed BISTU Honorary Professor and Honorary Member of Academic Committee

Beijing, 13th May, 2016(BISTU)--- President Wang Yongsheng meets with Professor Andrea Ferrari and Professor Daping Chu, professors of the University of Cambridge on the ceremony for Prof. Andrea Ferrari being appointed as BISTU Honorary Professor and Honorary Member of Academic Committee. Vice President Xu Baojie hosts the ceremony.

Wang  Yongsheng extends warm welcome to distinguished guests from the University of Cambridge and offers a brief introduction to BISTU. He says that cooperation between BISTU and the University of Cambridge has won initial success. Since establishment of International Laboratory for Advanced Photonics and Electronics, three Cambridge professors, namely, Prof. Ferrari, Vice President Ian White, and Prof. Daping Chu have been conferred honorary professors. It is hoped that cooperation between two parties is to be further strengthened and to achieve more successes.

Professor Ferrari introduces Department of Engineering and Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics and talks about their future development. He expresses that the Department of Engineering has quite a few Chinese students. He hopes to meet BISTU students there in the future for learning and research. Regarding being conferred Honorary Professor and Honorary Member of Academic Committee, Prof. Ferrari expresses that it is a great honor as well as a lot of work to do. He would like to build a bridge for cooperation between the two universities to work together in the area of robot and new technology.

Xu Baojie introduces academic achievements of Prof. Ferrari  and announces that Prof. Ferrari is conferred BISTU Honorary Professor and Honorary Member of Academic Committee. Wang Yongsheng presents the certificates and badge.    

Andrea Ferrari is Professor of Nanotechnology at the University of Cambridge and He is also the Chairman of the Executive Board of the EU Graphene Flagship. He is the founding Director of the Cambridge Graphene Centre and Head of the Nanomaterials and Spectroscopy Group at the University of Cambridge Engineering Department and Nanoscience Centre. He research interests include nanomaterials growth, modelling, characterization, and devices. In particular, he focuses on graphene, nanotubes, diamond-like carbon, and nanowires for applications in electronics and photonics.

After the ceremony, Prof. Ferrari delivers an academic report on Prospect of Graphene, Laminated Material, and Compound System. In the report, Prof. Ferrari offers an understanding of research history of graphene and related materials, latest research progress, and future development. He emphasizes that in researches on graphene and related materials, the most crucial step in future development would be the transition from fundamental research to applied research and finally to industrialized research which will lead academic research on graphene and related materials to actual, large-scale use.  

The ceremony and meeting is also attended by Prof. Lu Jing, Director of International Cooperation Department, Prof. Dong Mingli, Dean of School of Instrumentation Science and Opto-electronics Engineering, Prof. Zhu Lianqing, Director of  Key Lab of Opto-electronics Technology, and Deputy Director Cao Lin of Office for Scientific Research.
