Beijing, 30th October 2023 (BISTU)--- Aiming at improving holistic level of computer science as an academic discipline and the quality of education, BISTU held an expert workshop on computer science programs attended by President Guo Fu on 20th October 2023 at Jianxiangqiao Campus.  

The workshop invited Academician Zhang Yaoxue (professor of Tsinghua University), Prof. Li Zhoujun of Beihang University, Dean Yin Xucheng of School of Computer and Communication Engineering of University of Science and Technology Beijing, Dean Cai Bogen of School of Computer and Information Technology of Beijing Jiaotong University, and Director Li Xiaoli of Faculty of Information Technology of Beijing University of Technology as experts to explore future development of computer science as an academic discipline at BISTU.  

On behalf of the University, Guo Fu extended warmest welcome and the most sincere thanks to all experts. Following an introduction to the University including the past 86 years of endeavors, academic disciplines and academic programs, talent cultivation, academic research, commercialization of research achievements, and service to national and municipal development, Guo Fu pointed out that the University was aiming at making new breakthroughs in the next round of applying for approval of doctoral programs with emphasis laid on the demand of the new generation of information technology industry and advanced high precision industries. Computer science as an academic discipline provided important support with information technology as the feature of BISTU. It was expected that experts would offer suggestive thinking and advices to help computer science discipline in facing with the challenges coming along with the new round revolution of science and technology and industrialization of digital technology.  

Zhang Yaoxue pointed out that Computer Science School of BISTU was on a leading position amongst peer schools. Some research orientations such as Chinese information processing were on a relatively high level in China. Currently it was necessary to local where to make the breakthroughs, bring reform and innovation to mechanisms, mobilize the initiative of faculties and staff, and strengthen team building in all respects.  

Experts including Li Xiaoli produced positive comments on current progresses that School of Computer Science has made in talent cultivation, academic discipline development and team building. They suggested the School to make rational development objectives based on actual situations, highlight educational features and the difference among second-tier disciplines, bring strengths and effectiveness of academic platforms into full play, invest more efforts in representative research projects and elite courses & textbooks, integrate resources for approval of doctoral programs, and motivate faculties through policies.  

Vice President Wang Xingfen offered an introduction to development of academic disciplines. She expressed that the University would provide due help and support with development of computer science as an academic discipline. We were expecting good results in application for approval of doctoral programs and the next round of academic discipline appraisal while strengthening our competence in teaching and research so as to contribute to our objective of building a high level university with distinctive feature in information technology.  

Development and progresses of computer science as an academic discipline, analysis of academic discipline appraisal and development planning, and status quo & reform of postgraduate education at the School were respectively explained by Dean Li Ning of the School, Secretary Liang Xu of Computer Science Commission of CPC BISTU Committee, and Vice Dean Zhang Wei of the School.  

Li Ning expressed that valuable suggestions and advices of experts would be fully explored, followed by scientific planning for further improvement. He hoped that experts would continue to provide support and guidance for future development.  

The workshop was also attended by representative professors and other faculties of Computer Science School.
