BISTU Students Excel in Mathematical Contest in Modeling

Beijing, 11th June 2024 (BISTU)--- According to the notice published by Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM), BISTU students excelled in Mathematical Contest in Modeling/ Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) with 1 Finalist award (1.78% winning rate), 1 Meritorious Winner award (6.66% winning rate), and 2 Honorable Mention awards (23.06% winning rate). And the team supervised by Zhou Ping of School of Applied Science was awarded Finalist award.

Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) are international contests for high school students and college undergraduates. The contests challenge teams of up to three students to analyze, model, solve, and present solution reports to an open-ended application problem in the field of economics, management, environment, resources, biology, medical studies, and security issues. Each team consisted of three undergraduate students were requested to complete the assignment of modeling, producing solutions, verification, and essay writing within four days (three nights).

Prior to the Contest, School of Applied Science invited Finalist winners in previous years to share their experiences. A simulation session and pre-contest training was also organized. MCM/ICM is one of the important academic subject competitions that School of Applied Science organizes within the University. The Contest has effectively promoted in-depth integration between mathematics and other subjects.

School of Applied Science organized mathematical modeling contests of various levels each year. Thorough preparations have been made for students, inclusive of experience sharing, modules on modeling and mathematical experiments, training sessions, etc., which made the Contest a nice platform for nurturing high quality talents of applied learning.
