【Academician Seminar】 Academician Yu Dengyun Delivered Academic Report at BISTU

Beijing, 4th June 2025 (BISTU)--- Yu Dengyun, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chief Designer of the China Lunar Exploration Program's Phase IV, delivered an academic report titled “Exploring the universe and the moon for the future- China’s innovative progress” at BISTU on 3rd June 2025. The report was hosted by Chairperson Xie Jiangling of the University Council and attended by over 500 teachers and students.

Xie Jiangling met with Yu Dengyu and expressed thanks to him for the care and support with development of BISTU. Yu Dengyun spoke highly of the achievements that BISTU has made in campus construction, research innovation and talent cultivation.

Starting from a question “why we shall conduct lunar exploration”, Yu Dengyun offered a systematic explanation on the strategic meaning of lunar exploration and emphasized the key position of the moon in global competition of science and technology. The international community is now witnessing a new tide in lunar exploration. He said. One milestone after another, including the first lunar orbit by Chang’e 1 and the lunar samples brought back by Chang’e 5, vividly outlined perseverance of Chinese space explorers. He encouraged faculty and students to carry forward the lunar exploration spirit, break new ground, and strive for excellence in scaling the peaks of science and technology.

Dean Li Xuehua of College of Information and Communication Engineering hosted the Q&A session. Having answered the questions raised by students and teachers, Yu Dengyu commented that “there is no short cut in scientific and technological innovation. We shall learn and practice. We shall work as a team. We shall pursue the truth while keeping original aspiration in mind.”

Xie Jiangling said that Academician Yu Dengyun’s seminar is not only a lecture on frontier technology but also one on our faith. Each breakthrough we have made in lunar exploration is based on our courage in self-reliance-oriented innovation and craftsmanship. “Pursuing dreams, daring to explore, cooperating in tackling difficulties and win-win cooperation”, the lunar exploration spirit, provides young people today courage and strengths in marching forward. He added.

The report was attended by Vice President Chen Xin and Vice President Xiao Zhisong, organized by College of Information and Communication Engineering and Department of Research, and co-organized by Department of Faculty Affairs and Department of Student Affairs.

About Academician Yu Dengyun

Yu Dengyun, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Committee of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, Chief Design of China Lunar Exploration Program Phase IV, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the International Academy of Astronautics, and the Co-Chair of the International Astronautical Federation Sub-Select Committee on Satellite Commercial Applications, has been engaging in researches on space vehicle system engineering, dynamics and control technology, etc. He is one of the major contributors to China’s lunar exploration programs, China manned space program, high-resolution satellite program, etc.

He is the winner of two special prizes, 1 first prize, and 1 third prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and two first prizes of provincial-level Science and Technology Progress Award. Having published over 100 journal articles, he authored 6 books and has been granted 27 patents of invention. He was awarded the International Astronautical Federation's (IAF) highest honor - the 'World Space Award' in June 2020. In 2023, he won the Qian Xuesen Distinguished Contribution Award of the China Aerospace Foundation.
