International Students' Discovery of Traditional Chinese Culture Quintessence: BISTU Held Dragon Boat Festival Celebrations

Beijing, 28th May 2025 (BISTU)--- BISTU organized activities aiming at strengthening cultural immersion for international students on 27th May 2025. The activities on Dragon Boat Festival attracted international students from dozens of countries who experienced the charm and quintessence of traditional Chinese culture via making Zongzi, tying protective five-color bracelets and sachets, etc.

The event full of fragrant aroma of bamboo leaves and a festive atmosphere was attended by students gathering around four tables, eagerly learning how to fold bamboo leaves, fill them with glutinous rice, add fillings, and tie them with hemp strings. It was a first try for many international students. The scene was a delightful mix of happy attempts and laughter. “Is this Zongzi pyramid-shaped?” Kim Alexandr from Kazakhstan smiled and asked. Muanglong Tastida from Thailand, however, has been skillful enough to teach others how to make Zongzi.

President Guo Fu and Vice President Xiao Zhisong joined the activities and made Zongzi together with international students. The whole event strengthened faculty-student connection and conveyed a heart-felt message to all international students: the warmth of home is felt at BISTU and in China.

Guo Fu commented that Traditional festivals are vital carriers of Chinese culture and emotional bonds that help build a shared future for mankind. “What you have savored is not only the sweetness of Zongzi but also a deeper insight into the Chinese spirit of festive tradition and the ethos of familial-nation unity. Various cultures flourish in exchange and communication; education will have a better tomorrow through integration. BISTU extends warm welcome to friends from every corner of the world and we are convinced that you will connect, grow, and journey forward together here." Guo Fu said.

Xiao Zhisong encouraged students to participate in cultural activities held on campus. Cultural integration and mutual learning would bring students a better future and the warm of friendship. He added.

“It is more an extracurricular cultural trip than a single Zongzi-tasting experience,” said Puzyreuskaya Elizabet, “I have learned a traditional Chinese skill and gained a better understanding of the cultural meaning and emotions underneath traditional holidays.”

The event is one of the activities on cultural experiences held at BISTU for international students. The hands-on immersive learning method would help international students in understanding Chinese culture and enhance their cultural identity.

As the Dragon Boat Festival is drawing near, the warmth and joy that international students felt in the event has sowed the seeds of mutual understanding and friendship.
