Beijing, 24th November, 2017 (BISTU)— Upon invitation of BISTU Alumni Association, Xu Ying, outstanding alumnus of BISTU, currently Deputy Director of Navigation Technology Department of Institute for the 2nd Generation Navigation Technology of Chinese Academy of Science, delivers a report on History of Navigation and Positioning Technology. Xu Ying has been widely accepted by netizens as “post-1980s lady Ph.D. supervisor of Chinese Academy of Science”. The report is hosted by Lin Guoce, Assistant to Vice President, and attended by over 200 students from School of Information & Communication Engineering.
With a rhetorical question “what is navigation”, Xu Ying starts her report followed by development of navigation technology, covering a wide range of topics including coastal navigation, celestial navigation, earth-magnetism navigation, radio navigation, and man-made satellite navigation.
Then Xu Ying introduces and explains Compass Navigation satellite System and relating strategies. She points out that Compass holds onto the idea of self-reliance, openness, gradual growth, and inclusiveness. It is the best choice that China has made to suit the whole nation. It benefits not only China but also neighboring countries. “Compass is Chinese. However, it is also a Compass of the whole world.” Says Xu Ying. With regard to application of Compass in different fields, Xu Ying comments that “satellite navigation system is a gold key to the door of a nation. The key to our own door must be in our hands.”
The report is very informative. Students express that close contact with Xu Ying as a leading researcher of Compass shows great prospect of navigation industry. They now have a new thinking about future of the course and start to be aware of their missions and responsibilities.
