Beijing, 29th June, 2017 (BISTU)—“Innovation and entrepreneurship are combined together. Innovation is a way of thinking while entrepreneurship is, based on innovation, to create.” Says Wang Renyu, a student of BISTU School of Information Management, founder of two companies, and winner of a number of awards such as Start of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Beijing, Top 100 Pioneers of the Times of Beijing, and Top Ten Pioneers of BISTU.  

The four years at BISTU have witnessed his hardworking and struggle: participation in numerous associations and societies, foundation of his own project, establishment of his own company, starting an incubator to integrate resources of the University, etc. All roads lead to one destination: innovation and entrepreneurship.  


Initial challenge  

With regard to his own future, Wang Renyu has a planning as well as expectations. From the very beginning he has been exploring how to better utilize the following four years at college. The exploration is hard and is kind of “torment”, as Wang Renyu puts it.  

A team needs time to grow. It is very important to consider how the whole team could work effectively together and how strength of each member could be brought into full play. These are just some challenges that Wang Renyu faces with. As an organizer, he needs to show his expectations and requirements at any minute and keeps his mind clear through to the end. Some of his team members choose to work and some choose to study for master degrees. And thus entrepreneurial choice becomes a harder one.  

Wang Renyu is not originally from Beijing. When speaking of the biggest barrier of starting up a company, he says that “a undergraduate students in Beijing does not have much social resources, or has he many friends who would work together with him all along. Policy support does work. However, it is not that helpful. Positively energy needs accumulation, which means I have to contact new friends almost every day.”  

At the beginning, he starts a company to enhance personal competences. Later he finds that on the way to success, there are not as many opportunities as people have always mentioned. Start-ups need more hard working, but it is not a mystery. He says that at university, students are basically free and no one would intervene with what you are doing or what you are to do. However, you shall be responsible for yourself and on some crucial points there are faculties or staff who would help you. Therefore it is important to establish a future target for yourself. When the right time comes you will know that you can make it.  


Invention: Smart Holder for computers 

Where there is a will there is a way. He has been thinking about invention of a smart holder for computers and now the time comes. People usually stare at their laptops all the time and current holders are fixed and not very convenient. It would be much better if the holder could move and be smart to adapt to users.  

Smart holder robot is his new invention which could automatically adjust angles of display device based on head movement of the users who are monitored by a camera. When the head remains still for a long time, the holder could move automatically or shut down the computer. It is an invention of humanity and takes health of the users into consideration. It is also the combination of artificial intelligence and mechanical structure with application of advanced image recognition technology.  

On the 5th Achievements of Innovation in Science and Technology of College Students, held in December 2016, Wang Renyu and his team win Third Prize with their smart holder and reach agreements with investors. Beijing Youth Daily covers this story on December 7th 2016. And the invention also wins attention of Qianlong.com who invites Wang Renyu for a feature report. When developing this smart holder for computer displays, Wang Renyu is responsible for management and planning of the project and has to deal with various challenges every day. There are no similar products on the market and the team members have to conduct investigation and research all on their own. A crucial point is how to find the equilibrium point of human-computer interaction. In the end the software is successfully developed. Yet greater challenge is realization of the software on hardware. There is still a long way ahead of the team.  


Starting two companies: learning and entrepreneurial choice  

Learning is a lifelong process and the capacity of learning is crucially important for an entrepreneur. From thinking about start-up projects to organizing his own companies, Wang Renyu has never stopped learning. He believes that learning and entrepreneurial choice are not contradictory to each other. General education at college aims to enhance personal learning competence and business society could improve hands-on skills. Both are learning processes. Anyone with entrepreneurship is a good learner.  

Business activities are not public services on campus and no one would pay for failure of entrepreneurs. One of Wang Renyu’s companies is aimed at offering a platform for students with hands-on capabilities to try their dreams based on their curricula and market demand so that they would enhance their competitiveness before job hunting.  

Another company of Wang Renyu is to provide opportunities for those with entrepreneurial choice with a platform of practicing their theories. They would be able to, with the help of the platform, experience in person how to lead a team to accomplish a mission. As a university-based entrepreneurial incubator, this company helps various teams find market resources that they need, recruits staff members for the teams, and offers entrepreneurial education. The education of entrepreneurship is not purely business. It is a process of combining learning with practice and facilitates communication between enterprises and students.  

Wang Renyu graduates from BISTU in this June. The way to success is long. However, he will seek opportunities without reservation.
