Condolence on Prof. Zhang Fuxue

Beijing, 20th June, 2017 (BISTU)— BISTU is deeply saddened by the loss Prof. Zhang Fuxue, national science and technology outstanding worker, state-level expert with preeminent contributions, national expert in piezoelectricity and sensor technology, and expert entitled to special allowance of State Council. Prof. Zhang died at the age of 78 on at 11am, June 16th, 2017 in No. 306 hospital. The farewell ceremony, hosted in Babaoshan Funeral Parlor, is attended by BISTU senior administrators, directors and deans of divisions and schools, and faculties and students.



Born in Xuanwei, Yunnan Province January 13th, 1939, Zhang Xuefu showed his talent as a little boy. He was successfully admitted to Department of Physics at Yunnan University in 1957 and then worked at the Commission for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND) after graduation. After being transferred to Guangzhou and Sichuan respectively in 1966 and 1974, he moved to Beijing in 1985 to work at Beijing Information Engineering Institute.  

Prof. Zhang has devoted his whole life to academic research. In the past fifty years, his dedication and devotion has yielded rich fruits. The years in 1960s witnessed his invention of piezoelectric ceramics with high mechanic quality and high electromechanical coupling coefficient, which preceded the U.S. and Japan. In 1970s he became the first to successfully develop piezoelectric gyroscope. And he discovered gas pendulum phenomenon in the 80s and established gas pendulum theory which has now developed into a branch discipline--- gas pendulum inertia technology. His outstanding achievements have won him numerous awards of state level and provincial level as well as invention patents both home and abroad.  

Prof. Zhang Fuxue has received numerous awards and worked till the last moment of his life. Owing to his preeminent academic contributions and achievements, he is listed in the volume of physics of Academic Achievements of China’s Famous Scientists in the 20th Century, edited by Academician Qian Weichang.  

Prof. Zhang Fuxue has supervised 31 postgraduate students and 18 doctoral students who are now working in a wide range of areas such as education, research, enterprises, etc. and a number of them have been honored as national teacher of excellent, or have become Ph.D. supervisors, professors, researchers, or entrepreneurs.  

With his firm belief, honesty, and seriousness, Prof. Zhang has devoted his life to science and technology innovation of the country. And he is remembered by BISTU and by all forever.
