Beijing, 16th March, 2018 (BISTU)— Tutors of School of Instrumentation Science and Opto-electronics Engineering and School of Electromechanical Engineering welcome Vice President Wang Xiuyan for her survey on team building of tutors. This survey is questionnaire-led, focusing on improvement of competence, happiness and sense of achievement of tutors as well as growth of students. As part of the University’s “grand learning, grand survey, and grand discussion” activity, this survey includes projects’ members, vice deans of relating schools, tutors, and students’ representatives.
Following report delivered by two project teams, Wang Xiuyan positively confirms their achievements and exchange ideas on relating works and schemes.
Corresponding measures in teachers’ ethics, competences, team building, and career development are raised by Zhang Jingbo, Vice Dean of School of Applied Sciences and Academic Leader for the Project of Tutors’ Team Building. It is proposed that tutors shall have sound mindset of careers, strict discipline, strong job responsibilities, sense of calling, sense of honor, and strong career identity. The mechanism and system of recruitment, training, appraisal, and staff development shall be perfected to activate platforms for tutors’ development.
Discussion is on how to mobilize tutors’ initiative, content of training and methods of training. All agree that it is necessary to make a better top-design to introduce better, elite resources and enhance practical training on work of tutors. It is also important to supervise the training process and effectively evaluate training achievements. Senior tutors shall play a leading role in training of new tutors. The methods of training shall be innovated and be more active. Various focuses shall be set for different tutors. Also it is necessary to learn from successful experiences of other universities.
Vice Dean Zhang Jian of School of Information Management, academic leader for Mentor Project, introduces “Working Plan of Students’ Mentoring (Draft)”, including guideline, principle, organizational structure, content, team building, implementation of the plan, and other issues. The Plan suggests that an all-around model be introduced to involve each faculty and staff of the University. A closed loop shall be formed to include in-class tutoring, peer tutoring, development tutoring, learning consultation, and other relating issues.
The meeting also explores issues concerning feature work of the School, categorized tutoring, application of information platform, and the role of postgraduate students. It is agreed that the 45 minutes in class shall be fully utilized to create a better atmosphere of learning. Lecturers, class tutors, and parents shall be mobilized to participate in tutoring. Family-school connection is to be further enhanced and parents are to be regularly informed of the progress of their sons and daughters at the University.
Some effective ways of learning tutoring is introduced on the meeting, including roll calling on Sunday’s evening, scholarship-led role in freshmen’s classes, classroom discipline, combination of in-class and extracurricular activities, etc. It is agreed that a class tutor would play a great role if they could conduct tutoring with consideration of the features of majors. For example, in School of Foreign Studies, a certain class tutor organizes students to do morning reading and translation practice, which has been proven very effective.
Wang Xiuyan points out that the role of tutors shall be further clarified and the actual content shall be memorized by all tutors. An actual, doable system is necessary for training of tutors. Not only the training resources shall be integrated but also effectiveness of the training shall be able to cover a wider spectrum of tutors. We shall connect academic research with actual work to make scientific, efficient method and policy on faculty recruiting. Initiative of all faculties shall be mobilized. It is necessary to raise career identify of tutors to make them have hope in work so that they could bring their potentials into full play.
With regard to mentoring, Wang Xiuyan points out that students are always the No. 1 concern of all work. We shall build up a beautiful vision and attract more teachers and students to the work of mentoring. The role of lecturers, class tutors, tutors, peers, external experts, and parents shall be attached importance. It is a must to clarify the different duties and responsibilities of schools and the University. Information means shall be applied to generalized mentoring while focusing on individualized, feature mentoring. The role of classroom and module leaders shall be highlighted. A unified platform is to be constructed to respond to feedbacks in mentoring. Also the methods of mentoring shall be innovated and participation of peers in mentoring shall be encouraged. We shall fully utilize existing resources in students’ mentoring.
The University has established 11 research projects, led by vice deans of relating schools, division directors, and tutors, such as “team building of tutors”, “class mentoring”, “reward system for students”, “job quality enhancement”, “party building among students”, etc., aiming at further implementation of the spirit of the Central Government on ideological education for university students.
