National Social Sciences Foundation Project at BISTU: Naxi Dongba Ancient Books in Paris

Beijing, 12th November, 2015(BISTU) ---  “World Memory Heritage” Construction of Digital Sharing Platform for Dongba Classics (12&ZD234), a BISTU research project sponsored by National Social Science Foundation, saw it international exchange symposium as well as the exhibition titled “Looking for Naxi Manuscripts”  in Paris attended by project collaborative institutions, including Beijing Association of Dongba Culture and Arts (ACDA), Bibliothèque universitaire des langues et civilisations, (BULAC, or University Library of Languages and Cultures),  and French School of Asian Studies (EFEO, École française d’Extrême-Orient).  

Collection, interpretation and translation of ancient classics of Naxi Dongba culture which have been kept abroad is one of the objectives for the BISTU research project. Key members of the research team, Zhang Xu, Bai Feng, and Wu Guoxin, attended this international academic exchange and communication symposium. The meeting aimed at information collecting, international sharing, and interpretation and translation of classic ancient books kept with libraries and collection organizations. It also focused on exploring information collection methods and current progress of French studies in the field of Dongba cultural classics preservation.  

International academic exchange in Paris not only constructs a platform for international sharing of classics of Dongba culture, but also helps BISTU establish scientific research collaboration with French preservation and research institutions on Dongba culture.  BULAC and EFEO expressed that they expected to conduct cultural exchange and communication with BISTU and explore jointly in related academic fields.      

Research progress and achievements of BISTU project sponsored by National Social Sciences Foundation were highly appreciated  by French peers and research institutions in the field of preservation of Dongba culture. During the symposium a documentary, The Return of Dongba Manuscripts shot by the Project team, was shown to participants and experts.
