National Symposium on Digitization of Teaching Held at BISTU

Beijing, 23rd January 2024 (BISTU)--- Sponsored by BISTU and China Education Online and organized by BISTU School of Information Management, the first National Symposium on Digitization of Teaching, i.e., the finals of the first National Teaching Digitization Competition, was held at BISTU from 19th January to 21st January 2024.

The Symposium was attended by President Guo Fu (Chairman of the General Committee for National Teaching Digitization Competition), President Qin Huimin of National Society for Information and Documentation Research in Higher Educational Institutions, Editor-in-Chief Chen Zhiwen of China Education Online, Vice President Fang Deying of BISTU, Vice President Wang Xingfen of BISTU, Director Chen Li of National Engineering Laboratory for Cyberlearning and Intelligent Technology at Beijing Normal University, Director Zhao Guodong of Judge Committee for National Teaching Digitization Competition, Director Yu Hong of Organizing Committee of National Teaching Digitization Competition, and Deputy Director Wang Zhenyan of Organizing Committee of National Teaching Digitization Competition. The symposium was chaired by Dean Wang Hongjun of BISTU School of Information Management (Director of Organizing Committee of National Teaching Digitization Competition).

Guo Fu addressed the opening ceremony and extended warm congratulations to the Symposium and to successful completion of National Teaching Digitization Competition. Following the sincere welcome to distinguished guests, experts, faculties and students, he pointed out that human beings are now facing with a key issue of promoting educational reform and innovation, constructing a cyber, digitized, individualized educational system for life-long learning, and building a society of learning where “everyone everywhere can learn at any time” so as to nurture a large number of innovation-oriented talents. National Teaching Digitization Competition had important implications in respect of empowering education with digital technology, promoting educational reform in a holistic manner, and exploring the digitized pathway of development for education with Chinese characteristics. He offered an introduction to educational features, strengths, and achievements of BISTU. Being anchored in the strengths in information technology, BISTU would draw on strengths of the Competition to strengthen in-depth communication with other institutions, promote coordinated innovation, and enhance our competence in serving regional and national development. He added that the University would actively implement the national initiative in educational digitization. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data would be applied to facilitate the in-depth integration of digital technology and education. We aimed at promoting high-quality development of education and nurturing high-level talents of applied learning who will be extensively recognized and accepted by our society and by all industries. Guo Fu said. And he extended best wishes to the Symposium.

Qin Huimin extended gratitude to BISTU for sponsoring the National Teaching Digitization Competition and National Symposium on Digitization of Teaching. After explaining the importance, progresses, achievements, and existing problems of teaching digitization, he stressed that digital technology has added to the diversity and abundance of teaching resources, which made individualized learning feasible in today’s world. Meanwhile, digital technology could also provide scientific evidence for educational decision making and then enhance effectiveness of education. Therefore, it was a systematic project that required joint actions and efforts of governments, schools, enterprises, etc. Now all social circles should join the project to facilitate development of digital technology.

Themed on “Digital coordination in teaching management and assessment to promote high-quality development of education”, Wang Xingfen delivered a report covering the role of digital technology in empowering teaching reform, transforming learning environment, support intelligent management, and improving precision assessment. She emphasized that BISTU adhered to the principle that digital technology should focus on applied learning, provide better services for faculties and students, be simplified and efficient, and run in a safe and secure manner. The University has constantly been improving teaching management and quality assessment, building a digitized teaching environment, and improving digital qualities of all faculties. These measures and efforts have provided valuable references for decision making of the University in promoting high quality development of education. Wang Xingfen said.

Chen Zhiwen delivered a keynote speech on “Popularization and challenges of higher education”. He commented that talent cultivation would surely face with challenges under the context of higher education popularization. It was then necessary to lay emphasis on cultivation of new-type talents in digital era.

In “Teaching digitization in AI era: Reviewing the first National Teaching Digitization Competition”, Zhao Guodong pointed out that faculties should pay more attention to issues in teaching practice. Digital transformation and teaching digitization of teacher as a career should be achieved by organic integration of digital technology and teaching by a combination of online and offline means.

Chen Li pointed out in “Innovative development of perception on knowledge and learning under the context of digital transformation” that teachers should be aware of the new perception of knowledge and learning under the background of digital transformation. Emphasis should be put on building a community of knowledge evolution with interconnectivity between individuals and communities.

Awarding ceremony of the National Teaching Digitization Competition was chaired by Wang Zhengyan. The Competition attracted 860 pieces of works from contestants. Awards were presented to winners by distinguished guests and experts.

The Competition and Symposium aimed at learning the philosophy of the 20th CPC National Congress, implementing the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping on education, following the basic principle of fostering virtue through education, improving the level of digitization in teaching, and strengthening capacities of teachers in applying advanced technologies to teaching. Participants explored development tendencies, opportunities and challenges, and innovation and development of education via keynote speeches and observation of outstanding digitized teaching practices.

As a high level university of applied learning with distinctive feature in information technology, BISTU took initiative in implementing the national strategy of educational digitization and spared no efforts to promoting in-depth integration of digital technology and education. Information-related programs accounted for 70% of all undergraduate programs. As of today, the University has made substantial progress in digitization: over 170 intelligent classrooms and being accredited as a model university of intelligent campus in Beijing in 2023.

The Symposium was attended by administrators of China Education Online, representatives of contestants for the National Teaching Digitization Competition, directors and deputy directors of related BISTU divisions and offices, secretaries and deans of BISTU School of Information Management, and representatives of faculties and students.
