Beijing, 20th September 2023 (BISTU)--- What is a university? What do you think of the college life? In the past 86 years, what and how BISTU has contributed to education? How can a fresh student build up knowledge and a brighter future? President Guo Fu provided answers to these questions in his Facing with Challenges and Pursuing the Truth: Lesson One at BISTU, chaired by Deputy Secretary Wang Wenjie of CPC BISTU Committee on 20th September 2023.  

 

The Lesson One commenced with a big-data-based video clip on newly admitted students of BISTU in 2023. Guo Fu discussed matters concerning education and career development of students in three aspects.  

Regarding the origin and evolution of universities, Guo Fu adopted both eastern perspective and western perspective to explain the origin of universities, the development of Chinese universities on various historical stages, and the core spirit of universities. Guo Fu stressed that a university was where knowledge was born, produced, and spread. University students should stand in awe of and show respect to knowledge and constantly perfect their personhood in pursuit of knowledge.  

Regarding development of BISTU in the past 86 years, Guo Fu offered an introduction to fresh transition and transformation of the University, explained BISTU’s efforts in “saving our nation by engaging in industry”, “dedicating ourselves to the service of the country with industrial development”, and “building a nation of information technology”, and illustrated school-running orientation, objective, and educational feature of the University. Sharing with students the achievements and breakthroughs that the University has made in respect of staff development, academic discipline construction, academic research, innovation and entrepreneurship education, educational globalization, and campus culture, Guo Fu spoke highly of the sense of responsible of BISTU students, faculties, and staff in major event such as parade for celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party, volunteering in 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Beijing Winter Paralympics, covid-19 pandemic containment, etc. Guo Fu commented that the past 86 years have witnessed indelible contributions of BISTU to national development.  

Regarding innovative spirit and sense of responsibility of students today, Guo Fu said that students in the first place should be courageous to face with changes with a new mentality. College students should seek common ground while reserving differences, be self-disciplined, and achieve individual advancement and human wellbeing via independent and rational thinking. Second, students should try to become versatile and to strengthen humanity qualities while delving into the profound pool of professional knowledge. Third, students should be relentlessly resources and surmount science peaks with innovation and the courage to pursue the truth. With patient, perseverance, pioneering spirit, and optimistic attitude, students were expected to face with anything that might come in the way. And fourth, students should shoulder responsibilities of the times just as a man of action.  

Guo Fu sent his message to all fresh students: a young generation for China, a hope for future! It was hoped that students would get accustomed to college life as soon as possible, relish and cherish college life, build up professional skills and knowledge, and finally shoulder the responsibility of our times.  

 

On interaction section, fresh students scanned QR code on screen to like or comment the President’s speech and raise their questions. Guo Fu produced satisfactory answers to questions raised such as how to plan college life, how to make better use of spare time, etc. And it was concluded with a lucky draw for all fresh students.  

 

The Lesson One was live streamed on three campuses, i.e., Taihanglu, Xiaoying, and Jianxiangqiao, and was attended by directors of BISTU divisions and offices, deputy secretaries of BISTU schools, new class counselors, and all fresh students.  

 

 

Yu Hongjun, Finance 2302 at School of Economics and Management: President’s song leads me to a better understanding of BISTU. I am very proud of our strengths in engineering and our fine tradition. I am more than happy to win the lucky draw. I am confident that I will be a knowledgeable, versatile student.  

Zhao Haosong, Opto-electronics Communications 2301 at School of Instrumentation Science and Opto-electronics Engineering: Lesson one brings me warms and vitality of my new home---BISTU. Now I am ready to achieve the goal of the next semester. I very much look forward to the new college life.  

Li Xuejing, Translation 2304 at School of Foreign Studies: “What is college like” is the very first question by President Guo Fu. I hold that college is not just a campus to learn knowledge but also a place where I would get increasingly independent and where I would be growing up. My campus now is full of passion, youth, love, and friendship. I sincerely hope that the following four years would see me as a unique student majoring in translation.  

Lu Chang, Electronic Information Science and Technology 2301 at School of Applied Sciences: Lesson One by President Guo Fu brings us back to history, to vicissitude of times, and to educational strengths of BISTU. We would live up to the expectation of President Guo Fu. We would for sure become young people of “diligence and honor”.  

Li Zijun, Computer Experiment Class 2302 at School of Computer Science: in President Guo Fu’s humorous and witty speech, I learn about BISTU’s efforts in “saving our nation by engaging in industry”, “dedicating ourselves to the service of the country with industrial development”, and “building a nation of information technology”. The data vividly show us the achievements BISTU has made in the past years. As a fresh student, I am very happy and deeply inspired. The follow four years would witness my efforts and endeavor in learning and in contributing to our country.  

Liu Jingyi, Communications 2302 at School of Information and Communication Engineering: President Guo Fu’s speech makes me understand better the outstanding achievements that BISTU has made in the past 86 years. Learning environment here is superb and it will help us greatly in pursuing our dreams. I sincerely hope that I would be a completely new student to improve myself with an open mind and a much broader horizon.
